From Durres to Venice

Standard

Just came back from Durres, in Albania, where the fourth Summerfest Durres International Festival is underway in this harbor town 30 miles from the capital of Tirana. Enjoyed watching Barry Lyndon again on the big screen in a beautiful Blue Ray projection and some films from Kosovo and Rumania which would have been really difficult to catch in the US! Being there with one of my best friends, Paola Bellusci, really helped: it would have been hard to find some beautiful beaches outside of Durres (which is pretty horrible) without her.. but then grilled fish, beautiful sea and learning about what the Albanians went through during  their 45 years dictatorship made it all worth it! Actress Claudia Cardinale has also just arrived and the festival is now anxiously waiting the arrival of Francis Ford Coppola. But I had to leave because I couldn’t miss Venice Film Festival opening night with George Clooney and my friend Erri De Luca’s short  at the festival! Thank goodness the other friend “Paola” was waiting for me as well!

A voudou sculpture in a 2011 “world”

Ciao! This is my first “Ohpen” blog, an opportunity to write and exchange opinions about my favorite subject: ART.
I just finished to read an intriguing article, and I’m sharing with you an expert of it.
The July/August issue of Domus shows different point of view about AFRICA.
Alessandro Mendini, an important Italian architect, asks us to explore the magical power of objects – messenger and go – between objects, talismans and medicines for the body and the spirit. Inspired by the Vodun exhibition at the Foundation Cartier in Paris, he says: “Bocio dolls are brimming with soul and otherness: anthropomorphic charms that intercede in all directions. Their presence is as disconcerting as their ugliness. They are an assemblage of bits of wood, bird skulls and bones, feathers, animal parts, fabrics, nails and chains, glass, carved heads and horsehair, all held together with string, oils, clay, wedge and arrows, as in the mertydrom of St Sebastian. Every item oh this encyclopedia and its highly concentrated materials has its precise end personalized meaning: removal oh en enemy’s weapon, longevity, ….etc. We could all do with a bocio, an object-idol and fetish that we are afraid to touch, despite its essentiality as a functional but cathartic object. The bocio is the object that more than any other in the world lays bare its human presence- Consisting entirely of relics, it is more like a magic charm than the Neapolitan horn that we keep in our pocket. It is holier than a rosary. It is an exquisite corpse, a sublime point in art, religion and African philosophy, a Brancusi in reverse. Perhaps the innermost secret of the world’s animism lies in pan-African tribal identity.” So, what’s your “Bocio doll”?

FAIR TRADE exhibit in Los Angeles

Standard

We would like to suggest to our LA friends an interesting exhibit. All of the works featured in this show are created in statement of global standards and fair trade practices. Alongside this beautiful exhibition, there will be a 3-day marketplace for fair trade goods.

Exhibit Opening Saturday September 17th from 7 to 10pm  at The Loft at Liz’s

453 S. La Brea Ave, Los Angeles, CA 90036

The Loft at Liz’s exhibit entitled “Fair Trade” is dedicated to featuring works that speak to this increasingly relevant and transformative topic.  Our featured artists will be creating original works in statement of fair trade practices and others will actually incorporate the use of fair trade products as their medium.

Fair trade is an organized social movement and market-based approach that aims to help producers in developing countries make better trading conditions and promote sustainability. The movement advocates the payment of a higher price to producers as well as higher social and environmental standards. It focuses in particular on exports from developing countries to developed countries, most notably handicrafts, coffee, cocoa, sugar, tea, bananas, honey, cotton, wine, fresh fruit, chocolate, flowers and gold.

Featured Artists:

Stéphane Tourné
Ofunne Obiamiwe
Raksha Parekh
Pascal Giacomini
Andre Vanzijl

*Also featured for our opening reception will be a guest performance by musician WolfRobe.

Instrumentalist, vocalist and social activist, WolfRobe, will perform his unique brand of instrumental and vocal sounds.  From African tribals to hip-hop, jazz and spoken word, WolfRobe is a truly dynamic and multitalented performer.  His work transcends traditional soundscapes, awakening a sense of clarity in both a spiritual and primal sense.  You certainly won’t want to miss this amazing performance beginning at 8:45pm on Saturday September 17th.
